5.1 setup

Hello everyone,
Soon I'll finish building my home/project studio and it's time to plan the 5.1 setup.
The control room is for TV/film projects, i'ts about 20 sqm (50 cubic meters) and acoustically treated.
I was thinking of 3*8040a for L-C-R, 2*8030a for Ls+Rs and for the LFE I simply don't know..
I will not work with the cross overs of the sub woofer since my LFE speaker is discrete and not working "with" the other speakers at all.
1. What sub will work well with my setup? (btw, the 7070A is way way over my budget).
2. For my room dimensions, will 5*8030a do the work?
All the best.

DSP makes all the difference

Have you considered a SE solution?
5 x 8130A + SE7261A Sub.

It's more affordable than you may think if you buy it as a package.
I would go for a DSP solution every time, the difference is like night and day!

My 5 cents.

Thanks Pete but,
1. My interface doesn't support 6*AES outputs.
2. I need to work with full range fronts and I guess 5" won't give enough low end.
3. A little over my budget.

Any other options for 5.1 setup or sub?
Thanks.

1a) Do you have S/PDIF - use converters http://www.neutrik.com/en/accessories/a ... nsformers/
1b) You can use analogue input to 8130's but not the sub - hmmmm messy

2a) You will have seamless integration and full control over X-over freq as the fronts AES/EBU signal is routed through the sub.
2b) You'll need a sub with any monitor anyway except 8260.
2c) DSP just makes the integration perfect - tight, linear, time aligned etc.

3) Rob a bank, sell your grandmother, realize the extreme acoustic difference,
buy as a set - example http://vintageking.com/genelec-se-digital-power-pak

Hi,

7070A is the recommended subwoofer for that setup.

20 square meters is ok space for 8030A but it also depends so much about your listening/mixing levels. Do you mix at Dolby standard level 85 dB average / 105 dB peak?

What do you mean by "my LFE speaker is discrete"? Why wouldn't you want to use the Genelec subwoofer for LFE?

Thank you Ilkka,

In 5.1 I do mix at 85dB SPL, Stereo TV around 75 dB SPL.

What do you mean by "my LFE speaker is discrete"? Why wouldn't you want to use the Genelec subwoofer for LFE?

I mean that I need front speakers that in 2.0 (L/R) will have enough low end without a sub. (8030A vs. 8040A?)
I don't use a sub speaker to 'cover up' with the low frequencies in 2.0.

When I work in 5.1 I use the sub as a discrete speaker for LFE channel.
I wish I could afford the 7070A, but it's over my budget.
Any advice from you would be most helpful! Thanks again.

Based on your 85 dB mixing level requirement, I would definitely recommend 8040B. It has a -3 dB LF point at 45 Hz (anechoic, in-room you can deduct ~5 Hz). Is that low enough for your needs?

Unfortunately 7060B is too small if you want to mix at Dolby reference level, and have a system with 8040B main speakers. If you don't require 20 Hz extension, you could try 8050B as main speakers because they will offer you at least 35 Hz in-room extension with high SPL. The total cost would be lower than smaller speakers + subwoofer.
