1034B as Surrounds

Hi everyone, I am in the process of planning a new home. The home theater portion will be approximately 22,000 to 28,000 cubic feet, not including lobby. The ceiling will be 12 to 14 feet high AFTER cosmetic treatments. The room will be Max: 40Wx50Lx14H I will use 3 1036A units behind a Seymour-Screen Excellence's VistaCurve 190". The subwoofers are 2 Velodyne DD+ 18 inch. I would like to use 2 1034B units for the rear surrounds and 2 1034B units (1 each side) for the side surrounds. The entire system wil be installed and tuned by a Genelec Rep. The entire room will be professionally built and acoustically treated. Can I do this. If not, then why. What about 2 units rear and 2 units per each side....just curious!

Hello,

I would recommend using 1038B as rear and side surrounds. 1034B sized speakers are not needed for those channels.

Even though Velodyne DD+ 18" is a very capable subwoofer, having 6 18" woofers in LCR speakers puts a huge demand for subwoofers. I would recommend at least 4 DD+ 18" subwoofers for that system. Or if you would like to consider Genelec subwoofers, 4 7073A or HTS6 subwoofers.

Thank you much for your response. Are u saying the 1034B are overkill? But I am curious could they be made to work well in that setup.......hypothetically speaking? What would be any issues? The concern is running my system at reference level (105-125DB) and beyond for extended periods (8-14 hours per day). Can 1038B's take that demand and still have overhead rather than be at it's limits? Can I use 2 1038B's per side?
Concerning the Velodyne, thanks for the info. 4 subs. I have owned the DD 18, not the plus, for 4 years now. Love the sound and how low it plays. Shakes my ENTIRE home after a certain volume, and that is not a very high volume at all. I have not had the pleasure of hearing Genelec subs as of yet, but I am open to choosing other subs. I am also considering the JL Audio Gotham. I know Velodyne and Jl's can really take a pounding.....if called upon.

Yes, I would say 1034Bs are overkill for surround channels. The 1038B can handle reference level and beyond with enough overhead when used in surround channels. Of course you can also use 1034B, no problem at all. Or optionally 2 1038Bs per side because it's a rather long room.

Thanks! Yes, I think I understand another component. I am slowly realizing cinema theater presents many different challenges as opposed to home theater. I think I will go with 4 (FOUR) 7073A's.
