Genelec 8040 vs Genelec 1031

Question to the developers - on the forums there is a perception that the old line of Genelec monitors are better than new because it has less delay at low frequencies, is it true? In data sheet I can see that 8040 model (6.5 inch speaker with Bass Reflex) can play the same low frequency like 1031 model (8 inch speaker with Bass Reflex). Have 8040 model the same high quality low frequency reproduction like 1031 model?

Thanks!

Hello,

Sorry for not being able to reply sooner, I was having my summer vacation. :)

The delay (often called group delay) of a bass reflex speaker at low frequencies is mostly determined by the tuning frequency and the protecting electronic filtering below the tuning frequency. If one compares the older 1000 series and newer 8000 series, there is no audible difference that is caused by the group delay. Also notice that the typical group delay of a speaker is in the range of 20 - 50 ms (the highest value near the tuning frequency) while the typical 'group delay' (the amount of time the room 'rings') of an acoustically treated room is 200 - 500 ms at the same frequencies. That means you can't actually hear the group delay of the speaker due to masking effect of the room acoustics.

The 1031A has an 8" woofer while the 8040A has a 6,5" woofer. Also the amplifier power comparison goes to 1030A with 120W vs. 90W. This means that the 1030A is capable of delivering higher maximum SPL than the 8040A.
