The second question is harder because it's very difficult to describe a performance of a loudspeaker with words only. Naturally they are small speakers so if you have previously used to speakers with big enclosure and 8" woofer, the bass performance especially will not please you. But usually people are extremely pleased with the performance, especially when they notice the physical size of the speaker. So, YMMV.
And naturally you can always add the subwoofer later.
