Hello! I need some advise!

Hi all of you!

I'm a wannabe producer from Portugal hooked to electronic music and i want to buy a decent pair of monitor speakers to begin with. Since i never owned a pair of monitors i have to rely on other people's opinions and professional reviews. I have very very limited space in my crammed desk and i can't afford to fit KRK RP5s not other monitors of the same price and quality range. Recently a friend of mine advised me the Genelecs 6010A because of their size and sound clarity. The monitors fit in the limited space i have in my desk but i'm not sure if those are appropriate to produce electronic music. The price range is right and Genelec has great reputation on the market but i've read a lot of mixed opinions regarding these little monsters.

I know that opinions here may not be neutral but i wanted to hear what you have to say since you own Genelec products.

Thanks in advance!

PS: Since music genres and artists reflect on the speaker choice i will mention some of my favourites: Dieselboy, MSTRKRFT, Mr. Oizo, Monosurround, Raiden, Black Sun Empire, etc. etc.

Hi,

You may have already seen this, but if 6010A's are sufficient for The Prodigy, they should be appropriate for producing any kind of electronic music. 8-)

Reviews like this one frighten me...

http://www.techseed.co.uk/archive/2009/11/misc/review-genelec-6010a5040a-51-system/10113.html

Hi,

That particular review seems quite short and lacks a lot of important details. But in any case, negative issues were cables and sound quality (depth and level). Let's look at them.

If you are using the 5040A subwoofer, you will need to route all channels through it because that's how it gets its signal and also filters out the low bass from the speakers. This is called a bass management. If you have an AV pre/pro with suitable crossover filters, you can also use it for bass management. But I'm guessing this is not the case with your setup. If you are only using the 6010A speakers, you will naturally only route the main left and right channel signals to them.

Sound quality issues are always quite tricky because the reviewer doesn't tell any sort of reference. Even though 6010A/5040A makes a very capable system for its size, even the active design can't mess with the laws of Physics, i.e. small system can't make an extremely big sound, especially when it comes to lowest frequencies and maximum sound pressure level. But since you said that the space on the desk is limited, I can't see any other similarly sized system making any more SPL than 6010A/5040A based system. Maybe best thing would be to try them out at your studio before purchasing? Your local dealer should be able to loan a system to test.

Hello Ilkka. Thanks for the reply!

I think there are no Genelec distributors in my city, although i'm not 100% sure of this. I really don't want to compromise the low-end response therefore my fear when choosing from a brand wich i know very little. My desk size leaves me very little option to chose so most likely will be these to start with.

Can i connect the pair to a logitech sub-woofer?

I don't think there's any danger. I mean if you need small speakers that go reasonably low, 6010A's are your best choice. If you need better low end, you'll need bigger speakers or add a subwoofer.

If the subwoofer has an adjustable low pass filter, yes. You should set the filter so that it rolls off its response around 60 - 70 Hz. Also an adjustable phase control would be a plus. Naturally the 5040A would be your safest bet.
