8040A Red light issue?

Hey Genelec.

Just bought a new set of 8040a and these guys sound amazing ! I am curious if anyone else has same issue with red light flashing from one of the monitors (left)?

It happens when i turn up the gian on my interface. The other monitor seems to run fine. It’s Steady green. Is that a normal behavior?

setup: Daw, Duet Apogee and 8040a Both speakers are set to -6 db

Hi William,

Red lights indicates that the monitor are in protection mode. The protection circuitry prevents driver failures by detecting signal levels, and in case of sudden peaks or constantly too high levels, taking the signal level down automatically. Of course this feature does not affect the sound quality in any way when working within the specifications of the loudspeaker, but only prevents inadequate input signals from breaking the loudspeaker.

If you are not playing on high volumes, then the LED should not go red. If it is only the left monitor, try to switch monitor places to see if the fault follows the same monitor or does the fault always stay on left?

Hi Jani, Thank you for your quick reply!

The LED light is Steady green on both speakers when listening to them on "normal listening level" It only happens when i play loud.

I have tried different interfaces, setups etc. but still the same. So it's undoubtedly the same monitor that flashes red. If i increase the sound pressure level with 12-18 db the ohter monitor starts doing the same. (flashing red light) so I'm a bit confused.. It seems weird to me.

Hi William,

Sorry for late reply! The protection level should be close to each other between two monitors of the same model. Have you put the DIP switches to the same position? One way to test the protection level is to wear ear protection, set DIP-switches off, and volume controller to maxium from monitor potentiometer, then play pink noise to see is the protection level near each other, or does one of the monitors play highly louder than another one. If you doubt that there is something wrong in your monitor, please let me know where you are located and I'll provide you contact details of your nearest authorized service.

Hello Supporters!

Im sorry for the crazy late reply. I have travelled around the world and lived in another city.. so i haven't been in my studio like forever..  But I still have the same issue with the "protection level". I have tried the pink noise test, and unfortunately i got the same result.. my 8040A are calibrated so the play at the same output level. I also noticed that i get distorted sound from the amplifier before "protection level" kicks in to red LED. ist this normal behavior?

Bless!

William :-)
