Monitor - frontwall distance dependent on sub?

Hi,

in the new Monitor Setup Guide (https://www.genelec.com/sites/default/files/media/Studio%20monitors/Catalogues/monitor_setup_guide_2017.pdf) page 9, it says that you should avoid a speaker-frontwall distance > 60 cm.
Whereas on page 12 it's stated that you should avoid distances < 1.1 meter.
Does that mean that if I have a subwoofer it would be better to place the monitors > 1.1 meters away from the frontwall?

Hi raoulst,

both specifications are correct... When using a sub and crossing over at 85Hz, you can place the monitor over 1.1meters from the wall as the rear wall cancellation will not effect the response of the speaker as it is being crossed over above the cancellation frequency.

So have your speakers and subwoofer close to the wall.

Cheers

Steve

Hello Steve,

thanks for your answer.
So I understand, that when I have a sub, placing the monitors farther than 1.1m away from the frontwall is fine, but moving them closer to the frontwall would be fine as well.
I have to admit that I find "avoid" to describe that distances closer than 1.1m would be ok, a little confusing.

Kind regards, raoulst

Sort of,

you either want the speakers close to the wall or over 1.1 meters from the wall, you don't want the front baffle of the speakers 600mm - 1000mm from the wall, as you potentialy can have cancellations above the x-over.
