Which sub/How many subs?
Youngling Posts: 5 Join Date: 2/19/18 Recent PostsHello,
my name is Wolfgang and I´m new to this forum.
Some days ago, I realised a dream and I bought for my homecinema 2x8260 as front, 1x 8341 as Center and 2x8330 GLM as surrounds. My first idea was to test, if I could run this setup without any sub (in my previous setup I had 4 active subs by Canton). Reason for this was to stimulate the sub-frequenzies all over the room. There are some erasements around 80hz and so on without the subs. With this multisub-method the sub-frequenzies were much better.
The two 8260 together with the GLM cannot perform in the deep frequenzies like the 4 subs. Therefore I´m thinking about one or several new genelec subs. Question for me is, whether it would be better to buy one larger sub like the 7360 or two smaller one like 7350. These subs I wont´t use to increase the SPL of the room, but to improve the frequenzy response of the room. So my thought, the more subs in the room, the better will be this frequenzy response.
Any ideas or hints on this question?
Regards
Wolfgang

Jedi Knight Posts: 180 Join Date: 4/25/14 Recent PostsI would recommend 7370's or 7380's. the 50 and 60 is a little bit to small for your setup.
Start by adding one and go from there

Jedi Master Posts: 340 Join Date: 4/6/09 Recent PostsI would like to know where you have setup your 8260's, i typically get 18Hz extension from 8260's but i usually get my clients to place their speakers as close to the front wall as possible. Your 80Hz cancellation may be from having the 8260's out from the wall.
I personally prefer one large subwoofer at the front of the room, the size of the sub will depend on the size of your room, but for your speaker setup, i'd be recommending a 7380A.

Hi, thanks at all for your reply.
The 8260´s are placed about 90cm away from the front wall (measured from the front of the speakers). This is due to the construction of my cinema (there is a curtain 50cm in front of the wall. Right before this curtain I have placed the 8260. So it would be difficult for me to get the 8260 closer to the wall (even if I know, that it could be helpful in terms of getting more bass)
The room is about 78m³ (6,70x5,05x2,32).
Well, the 7370 or 7380 are colossuses. Do I really need such a "monster", even though I only want to fill up some holes in the frequencies and don´t want to increase the SPL?
Regards
Wolfgang

Hi Wolfgang,Can you post GLM screen shots showing the measurements of your speakers??
The reason for the 7370 or 7380 is not to increase SPL, but to match the output potential of your current system.

Jedi Master Posts: 340 Join Date: 4/6/09 Recent PostsReasonably good looking plots...
As you can see you have extension down to around 18Hz, so a sub wont give you extension, but it will allow for more SPL less distortion in your system.
There are numerous discussions about potential subwoofer configurations. Personally i prefer 1 large, or multiple nested subs from a location on the front wall, i find this gives me the fastest most percussive bass. As our ears are relatively poor at discriminating level differences at low frequencies, i don't believe multiple subs spaced around your room would provide much benefit, potentially they could provide more problems than they solve...
I'd try and clean up the 100 - 600Hz area, i'd encourage you to move your speakers up and look at nearby reflective surfaces.
Cheers
Steve
